Scenario Overview

In project 2 we split into two sub-teams; one focusing on modeling the container to hold surgical equipment when it is transferred to an autoclave, and the other focusing on programing the Q-arm to pick up and drop off the container into and out of the autoclave.

I was on the modeling sub team where our mission was to create a container that would securely hold a surgical device for use in an autoclave. From there we continued to add some more specific criteria that we believed was important for our design. For out final product we produced an Autodesk Inventor assembly file and a G-code file to 3d-print.

Container Design

For our container we believed that the three most important aspect would be that the container allows for easy sterilization, hold the tool securely, and be low in mass. The first goal was completed by adding many openings on all side of the container, this also aided in making the container lightweight. To ensure there was complete circulation of the steam we also added some standoffs to the bottom of the container that would insure that the bottom holes could still let the container drain even when it is placed on a flat surface. To meet the second goal we added inserts for the tool to be placed into, since they were formed to fit the tool they would have a tight grip on the tool so that it would not shift around during the moving process.
